While regularly consuming fruit and vegetables is thought to be the key to living a healthy lifestyle, it turns out that how you eat is just as crucial.

According to a survey, most people don’t consume the required amounts of fruits and vegetables, and those who do are depriving themselves of the full nutritional benefits by eating them improperly.

Here are some ways to improve your food habits:

  1. No cutting, peeling or rinsing

The beneficial characteristics of vitamins C, A, and E might be lost if fruit and vegetables are improperly prepared. The skin of fruits and vegetables shields these anti-oxidant vitamins, and they might deteriorate when chopped or peeled.

It’s also crucial to remember that by rinsing your sliced vegetables, you could essentially be pouring vitamins down the drain. Water carries water-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin C, which might leak out after cutting or in water.

The fruit should be eaten shortly after being cut. Fruits begin to lose their nutrition, and even the alkaline fruits start to turn acidic. Fruits’ peels shield the pulp from air, light, and heat, but when the fruit is chopped, the relatively weak pulp is exposed to all three. The fruits’ anti-oxidants begin reacting with oxygen. Numerous nutrients are also lost, along with the anti-oxidants.

  1. Eat seasonal and local fruits.

Our food habits and climatic requirements have changed over time. Therefore, it is ideal to only consume seasonal fruits produced locally. Fruits that have been forcefully cultivated using various chemicals against natural conditions can have negative effects if consumed out of season. Therefore, try to learn about the regional and seasonal fruits and try to purchase them from local merchants. You would improve both your health and the local economy.

  1. Avoid Combining Milk with Fruits

Fruits and milk should not be combined because this can cause various health issues. Milk begins to curdle when it is combined with sour, unripened fruits like unripe mango, etc., or with citrus fruits like oranges. Similar to what happens when you squeeze a few drops of lemon into milk. After the milk has been curdled, it becomes more difficult to digest. Berry, citrus, and unripe fruit should never be combined with milk. Also, the highly acidic after-digestive effect of Bananas makes mixing them with milk a bad idea.

  1. Avoid Consuming Fruit at Night

Anything should be avoided two to three hours before bedtime because it interferes with digestion. Fruits also fall under this category. Because fruits release a lot of sugar, which spikes energy levels just as the body is about to prepare for sleep, eating fruit before bed has a high likelihood of disrupting sleep. Additionally, consuming fruit late at night may result in acid reflux symptoms. Fruits should only be consumed as an evening snack and no later. 

Your health can greatly benefit from increasing your awareness of and discipline around your nutrition. If you have these considerations in mind when eating fruits, you’ll probably benefit much more and digest more nutrients. You wouldn’t experience digestive problems like acid reflux or heartburn.
